Bad tax advice, a simple mistake or just trying to save a buck?
The Detroit Free Press reports that state Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, has shortchanged the Dearborn Public Schools since 2008 by getting an undeserved property tax break. In all, she could owe more than $1,000 with interests and penalties.
Paul Egan of the Freep reports:
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, and her husband, Fayez claimed a 100% personal residence exemption for both the Detroit home they live in and a rental property they own in Dearborn, city assessment records from both municipalities show. Only the Detroit home was eligible for the homestead exemption, which reduces school taxes.
It's an embarrassment, Tlaib says.
“This was an honest mistake; I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t catch it,” Tlaib, who is running for the Michigan Senate, told the Free Press.
