Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday will announce in Detroit a deal to build a $2.1 billion Detroit River bridge to Canada, according to Crain's Detroit Business and other media outlets.

Details haven't been disclosed.

"We can't confirm any agreement or announcement. As soon as we have news to share, we will," Sara Wurfel, Snyder's press secretary, wrote in an email.

The Windsor Star reported several high-ranking politicians from Canada and the U.S. are expected to take part in the announcement, including Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Gary Doer and federal Transportation Minister Denis Lebel.

It was unclear whether the announcement would take place in Windsor, Detroit or include stops in both cities.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet — or a cabinet subcommittee — is scheduled to meet today to approve the bridge agreement, sources said.

It could not be confirmed Tuesday if Harper will make the trip to Windsor to participate in the announcement.

DRIC officials say the project will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs on both sides of the border during construction of the new crossing, plaza and feeder roads. The $1.4-billion Windsor-Essex Parkway — a new border freeway designed to connect Highway 401 to the DRIC bridge — is about 30 per cent complete. A similar road in the Delray neighbourhood of Detroit connecting the bridge to I-75 is also required.
