City attorney Krystal Crittendon, who placed third in the mayoral primary, Wednesday endorsed Benny Napoleon for mayor of Detroit.
“I’m the no-nonsense city attorney who has gotten up every day for the last 20 years to fight for what is right for Detroit, and for Detroiters,” said Crittendon in a statement. “My goal has always been simply to think with clarity; act decisively, and to lead with integrity. Today, I stand in the middle of what I believe to be the most important election of our lives. At a time when the stakes could be no higher – and the contrast between the two candidates could be no clearer.”
The endorsement should come as little surprise since Crittendon has been mentioned as Napoleon's choice for deputy mayor. Napoleon spokesman Bryan Peckinpaugh said Wednesday that Napoleon and Crittendon have discussed that possibility, but nothing has been decided.
“I believe this election boils down to two things: whether we elect a mayor who will improve the quality of life for all Detroiters; or one who improves the lives for only an elite and selected few,” said Crittendon. “Benny has laid out very dynamic plans on how he will reduce crime in our city by 50 percent. And he has laid out his plan to drive $3.5 billion of investment into our communities to transform our neighborhoods. Therefore, I am asking all Detroiters who want to see crime reduced, and their neighborhoods finally get the attention they deserve, to join me in electing Benny Napoleon as our next mayor of Detroit.”
Crittendon caused as political storm last year, when as head of Corporation Counsel, she challenged a consent decree between the city and the state that could have warded off an emergency manager. She angered Mayor Dave Bing and she was eventually demoted to a civil service job in the legal department.
