A young southwest Detroiter has a grown-up lesson in the reality of living in a sometimes-rough neighborhood.

“I could have been dead at 10 years old," says Kelvin Crumpton, who tells Lauren Podell of WDIV about a sudden, scary experience Tuesday.

The crime occurred at a Citgo gas station in Delray.

It happened on a ride home from school with his dad, who stopped at a Citgo station on Dearborn Street in the Delray area to get a beverage for the thirsty student.

While dad went in the store, Kelvin waited in the back seat of the red Chevy Blazer. Minutes later, a stranger was behind the wheel.

"When he pulled off I yelled, ‘What are you doing? Get out of here,’ ” said Kelvin. . . .  “That’s when he pulled off the road and told me to get out, so I had to run all the way back to the gas station."

Police, who have no suspect in the carjacking and brief kidnapping, found the vehicle near Gleason and South Wearing.

Kelvin's mom, Tamika Griffith of Redford, shared her relief with WDIV:

“I am just so grateful he is here today. These days so many kids don’t make it home.

“I would say to that man, 'Thank you. Thank you for letting my son go, I forgive you.' ”
