Political leaders from Canada and the United States will sign an agreement today for a new public bridge from Detroit to Windsor.
Supporters hope they've crafted an ironclad deal that can survive legal challenges or other obstacles to building the bridge, writes John Gallagher of the Free Press.
But it could take six years for planning and construction before the bridge opens. And a variety of problems could delay it, especially Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun.
Moroun and his allies have begun a petition drive to put a referendum on the statewide ballot in November requiring voter approval to build a new international bridge or tunnel for motor vehicles.
Known as "The People Should Decide," the referendum would amend the state constitution to require such a vote both statewide and in the municipality where the bridge or tunnel is proposed.
