There's no question the next mayor of Detroit will face some very daunting problems ranging from crime to economic woes to a rapidly declining population.
But what still remains unclear is how much power the Detroit mayor will have after being sworn in in 2014.
Leonard Fleming of the Detroit News writes:
No one can be certain what kind of power or influence a new mayor inaugurated in January 2014 will have, if any. In a worst-case scenario, the mayor and City Council could be sidelined with the arrival of an oft-threatened emergency manager whose mission is to steer the city back to solvency.
So far, the two biggest names who have indicated they will run are Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and Mike Duggan (pictured above).
The election is set for November 2013.
Mayor Dave Bing has not declared whether he'll run for re-election, but some political observers believe he'll hang it up in 2013 and not run for re-election.
