State Rep. Todd Courser,  the man in the middle of a crazy sex scandal in Lansing, apparently hopes everything just goes away.

Some people hope he just goes away.

Kathleen Gray and Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press report that Randy St. Laurent, a former Republican chairman in Lapeer County, says he should resign or face a recall effort.

St. Laurent said he issued the ultimatum after meeting Friday with Courser, the Freep reports.

“He told me he’s working on it,” St. Laurent said of the resignation possibility, St. Laurent told the Free Press Wednesday. “As soon as he said that, I knew he wasn’t going to resign.”

St. Laurent, 64, said he doesn’t think he would have trouble collecting the 7,000 to 8,000 signatures he would need in the 82nd House District to force a recall election, but he’s concerned about any additional cost to local taxpayers and is exploring a possible fund-raising effort to cover that cost.

Courser apologized online Monday, but said he wasn't resigning. He also said he was a victim of blackmail by the "Lansing mafia."

The scandal surfaced last Friday when The Detroit News reported that Courser, a conservative Tea Party member,  concocted a plot to cover-up an affair with state Rep. Cindy Gamrat. Both are married and are big on talking about family values.

As part of the cover-up, Courser  told staffers to send a bogus e-mail accusing him of a porn addiction and paying for sex with a man outside a Lansing nightclub. The Freep reports he did that in the hopes it would smoke out the identity of an anonymous person he says was threatening to expose his extramarital affair with Gamrat if he didn’t resign his House seat.
