Donald Trump and Mike Pence
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, having a bumpy ride lately, slips in polls nationally and locally. National stories in the past few days suggest the "Teflon Don" is losing some of his Teflon.
Hillary Clinton leads by 9.4 percentage points in Michigan, according to a Local 4/Detroit News poll of 600 likely voters by The Glengariff Group, Inc. after the Republican and Democratic national conventions.
Specifically, the poll gives Clinton 41% of the vote compared to Trump's 31.6%. Results show 14.2% were undecided.
The News also reports:
Sixty-one percent of likely general election voters said Trump is ill-prepared to be the nation’s commander-in-chief. The figure grows to 67 percent among women
The poll contains many troubling signs for Trump’s White House campaign, including a “shocking” lead for Clinton in the Republican strongholds of west and southwest Michigan, pollster Richard Czuba says, according to the article by Chad Livengood and Jonathan Oosting.
In May, Glengariff Group surveyed a three-way race including Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, and Clinton led Trump 37% to 33%.
Michigan always is a key state in the race for the White House.
On Monday, Trump will try to close the gap with a luncehon speech to the Detroit Economic Club at the Detroit Marriott Hotel in Renaissance Center. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program is scheduled to begin at noon. Public tickets are on sale here through noon Friday.
