It wasn't supposed to be this easy.
One, two, three, four. The Tigers beat the Yanks 8-1 in Game Four today at Comerica Park, pummeling Yankee Ace CC Sabathia.
The Tigers are off to the World Series for the 11th time in franchise history, and the first time since 2006. It was the first post-season sweep for the Yankees since 1976.
The Tigers pitchers turned the Mighty Yanks into the Mousy Yanks in four games. We watched A-Rod pout. We almost felt sorry for how poorly he performed (emphasis on "almost"). Ditto for Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and the rest of the folks on that big fat payroll.
Now, it's waiting time. San Francisco or St. Louis?
Interesting, these are the Tigers people expected very very early on in the season. Then came the bumpy road. Winning streaks followed by losing streaks.
Doubt wrestled with hope all season long. It wasn't too long ago that the Tigers were three games out, chasing the White Sox. Some almost gave up.
Hope. That's what occupies Comerica Park today. -- A.L.
Here's what N.Y. Post columnist Joel Sherman wrote:
DETROIT – There is only wreckage now, the detritus of having every weakness exposed, of falling apart so completely as to make it difficult to see the outline of a major league team, much less the New York Yankees.
Over the coming days and weeks, Yankees management must assess the meaning of that wreckage, of a humiliating ALCS sweep by the Tigers.
