The Michigan Supreme Court today appointed a special judicial administrator to take control of Detroit's 36th District Court.
Paul Egan reports in the Free Press that the appointment of Judge Michael J. Talbot, a judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, follows last week’s scathing assessment of the court’s finances and operations by the National Center for State Courts.
The agency “concluded that the district court is embroiled in an economic crisis that calls for both immediate and long-term action if the court is to continue functioning,” the Michigan Supreme Court said in a news release.
The report noted the court has a budget overrun of $4.5 million this year.
