It's been ongoing issue ever since Internet shopping became popular.
On Thursday, the state Senate took on the issue, voting 21-16 to require online retailers to charge Michigan's sales tax on purchases, Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press reports. The bill now goes before the state House for consideration.
The Freep reports:
The bills are geared toward getting big online retailers like Amazon, Overstock and eBay, to start charging Michigan's sales tax on purchases made from residents in the state.
"My family's company has been doing business in Michigan for over 60 years, designing and making kitchen cabinets. We quite often take hours and hours of time with customers who take our plans and leave, and order $30,000 worth of cabinets online," said Sen. Mike Kowall, R-White Lake. "That's sales tax revenue that's not going to schools and is missing from our state coffers."
