Gov. Rick Snyder doesn't have much to lose going up against President Donald Trump. He didn't back the fellow Republican and isn't seen as a real ally. Plus, his political career is likely over after 2018 because of the Flint water crisis.

In that context, Snyder pushes back against President Donald Trump’s initiative to use state and local police officers to help enforce the nation’s immigration laws, Michael Gerstein writes in The Detroit News.
In an executive order Wednesday, Trump directs his attorney general to negotiate agreements with each state so local law enforcement officials are empowered to be immigrant enforcement officers.
“I don’t view that as one of their primary functions,” Snyder says Thursday. “We’re actually doing very well in terms of bringing violent crime down within the state of Michigan. And we’re gonna work hard on continuing to make Michigan a safer place.”
Snyder isn't the only governor to signal that he won't go lock-and-step with whatever Trump wants. California Gov. Jerry Brown has made it clear he will push back against Trump when necessary.
