The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Tuesday narrowly approved Betsy DeVos’s nomination to lead the Department of Education, the Detroit News reports. The vote was 12-11 along party lines.
The nomination now goes before the full Senate.
Both Democrats and Republicans voiced some concerns about her nomination. Some said she was unqualified and had a bias against public schools.
Melissa Nann Burke of The News reports:
Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed some reservations about DeVos’ nomination to head the U.S. Department of Education. Both Collins and Murkowski said they would vote for DeVos in committee, so she could face a vote on the Senate floor; however, they would not guarantee their support her yet in a final confirmation vote.
