Emergency management of public operations is a growth field in Southeast Michigan.

The state is preparing to intervene in the Pontiac School District, Chad Livengood reports in The Detroit News.

Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday said the Pontiac School District is in a financial emergency, a declaration that could lead to the appointment of an emergency manager, bankruptcy or other state intervention.

Snyder said he agreed with the findings of a state-appointed financial review team that determined the Oakland County school district ran up a $37.7 million deficit in the most recent school year. . . .

“We need to look out for the children and we want to make sure that Pontiac School District has the financial resources to open its doors next month,” Snyder said in a statement.

Under emergency manager law, the Pontiac school district has seven days to request a hearing on the review team’s findings and governor’s financial emergency declaration.
