Pressure continues to mount for Dave Agema to quit as a national committeeman from Michigan following a long history of racist and homophobic comments.

Zeke Miller of Time magazine reports that the Republican National Committee’s executive committee voted Wednesday in a closed-door session in San Diego involving party leadership to censure him. The leadership also demanded his resignation.

The leadership also asked that the state GOP find a way to remove him. Republican Party rules do no permit the national party to remove a committee member from office, Time reports.

Agema has ignored repeated calls in the past from party officials to step down.

“Dave Agema’s history of harmful and offensive rhetoric has no place in our party, which is why the RNC executive committee acted in the swiftest way possible to avoid giving him a platform,” Chairman Reince Preibus said shortly after the vote, according to Time. “We have voted to censure him, and we are urging the Michigan GOP and their voters to explore options to discipline Agema for his actions. Today, we used all available tools to remove him from the committee.”
