Small-batch breweries making India pale ales and other non-mass market beers are so trendy that the New Yorker magazine has a new interactive map showing stats for each state.

Michigan's figures are worth toasting: 122 craft breweries (fifth-highest, up 23% from 2011) and 438,383 produced barrels in 2012 (eighth-highest volume), according to the Brewers Association. Bell's Brewery ranks seventh nationwide in craft beer volume among companies.
As it happens, this is an appropriate time locally to toast the expanding selections. Detroit Craft Beer Month brought a Bru Fest to Royal Oak last Saturday and now features a Detroit Summer Beer Fest at Campus Martius Park with more than 120 craft beers.
It continues from -6 p.m. Saturday. The $45 cost covers 20 two-ounce servings.
Food and additional beer servings are available for purchase.
