President Obama isn't saying "Let Detroit go bankrupt."
On the other hand, he's not saying "I won't let Detroit go bankrupt."
The Detroit News reports that the White House won't be offering a hand to help Detroit should it go over the financial cliff. But the president's press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday that President Obama is keeping tabs on the city’s financial woes.
“I know that the president is aware of the situation in Detroit and that administration officials have been in contact with leaders in Detroit, but I am not aware of any plans or proposals that the president has, but we’re certainly aware of the circumstances,” Carney said, according to the News.
The subject came up during the daily press briefing at the White House.
