A long-time politician trying to sell himself as an outsider looking to reform the system during a mayoral campaign? It sounds like Mike Duggan, but it's not.
Leon Jukowski was elected Pontiac's mayor is 2009, after previously serving as the city's deputy mayor and unsuccessfully running for mayor in 2001 and 2005. Despite that long record of political activity, Jukowski says Pontiac's "old guard" is trying to keep him from winning a second term.
The Oakland Press: Jukowski names former Mayor Walter Moore, Oakland County Commissioner Mattie Hatchett, state Rep. Tim Greimel, the Rev. Douglas Jones, engineer Robert Lavoie, the owners of the Ottawa Towers, attorney Elbert Hatchett and his son, Franklin, in the piece.
“You know we can’t go back to doing business the old way,” the flyer said. The mayor said that the people mentioned were named in opponent Deirdre Waterman’s campaign literature.
Naturally, Pontiac's "old guard" is outraged that Jukowski would accuse them of...doing things they actually did. For instance, Jukowski said Commissioner Hatchett opposed a plan to allow Oakland County Sheriffs' deputies to patrol Pontiac. How does she respond?
The Oakland Press: An impassioned Commissioner Hatchett told Jukowski the statement is a “boldfaced lie,” and said she was representing her constituents, who wanted to maintain the Pontiac Police Department.
See, she wasn't against the deputies. She was for the police! Totally different.
Don't ever change, Pontiac.
