Mark Hicks of the Detroit News reports the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners is studying whether to recommend city officials keep the Police Department's Gang Squad after an outcry from residents, its chairman said Thursday night.

"The information gleaned tonight … seems to indicate that the citizens are passionate about keeping the Gang Squad because they're a valuable resource," Rev. Jerome Warfield said after a board community meeting on the city's east side.

Last month, city officials announced plans for the Detroit Police Department to eliminate its gang and tactical units in a bid to place more officers on the street. The restructuring was expected to add 100 cops to the homicide, criminal investigations and traffic squads.
