    Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano
Robert Ficano's direct appointees account for 60 percent of his county's 288 appointed government employees, John Wisely reports in the Detroit Free Press.

Cash-strapped Wayne County spends almost $50 million a year on appointee salaries and benefits, providing . . . an average salary of $95,381, according to data obtained by the Free Press. . . .

Oakland County's 126 appointees have an average salary of $90,152. . . .Elected officials in Macomb County, where almost all employees belong to unions, have only 29 appointees. A salary breakdown was not immediately available.

Budget cuts could thin Wayne's appointee ranks this year, Wisely's front-page lead article suggests.

"There is going to have to be a reduction in the number of appointees," said Wayne Commissioner Laura Cox, R-Livonia. "Absolutely, that has to happen. A good leader leads by example."

Since last year, Ficano has reduced his appointee ranks by 12 people after commissioners formed a task force to review appointee compensation in the wake of a $200,000 severance payment for former Chief Development Officer Turkia Awada Mullin.
