Five hockey games and winter carnival-like festivities on Detroit's southwest side aren't quite the Winter Classic, though they're on as scheduled -- unlike this year's cancelled NHL event in Ann Arbor.
The fourth annual Frozen Fish Fiasco runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Jan. 26) at the Clark Park rink in Southwest Detroit, Terry Sullivan reports at the Detroit Regional News Hub's blog.
Funds raised from the event go to the Clark Park Coalition to help keep the park open and thriving for the neighborhood kids and to help make Detroit a better place to live. . . .
The Clark Park Coalition was formed back in 1991 to partner with the city to keep the park and its ice rink opened. During the past two decades, the coalition started a hockey organization for local kids who play for free and the CPC also has covered the cost of ice time and equipment. Without the coalition, most of the players in the Clark Park Hockey Association could not afford to be on the ice.
Youth hockey gear can be donated for use by neighborhood players. The event also includes a raffle during each game and a silent auction that ends at 8 p.m. in the House of Shamrocks, 23420 John R Rd.
Clark Park is three blocks west of West Grand Boulevard, between Vernor Highway and Lafayette Boulevard.
