Scrooge impersonator Matty Moroun is in a battle to buy the vacant Southwestern High School on Fort Street in Detroit.
Things have gotten a little complicated.
On Friday, the state Emergency Loan Board gave preliminary approval for Detroit Public Schools emergency manager Jack Martin to sell the property for just over $1 million to ProVisions LLC of Bingham Farms. The firm wants to create a mixed-use development, The Detroit News reports.
But the battle isn't over.
The Detroit School Board solicited bids for the vacant school, and of the three it got, Moroun was highest, at $1.75 million. The Detroit Free Press reports that Michael Samhat, president of Moroun’s Crown Enterprises Inc. of Warren, said the company wants the school for corporate offices and a community center and vocational training.
As a result of all this, Emergency Manager Martin said the school district will call for a new round of bidding to resolve the matter and get the best deal.
Shuttered in 2012, the school is located near the proposed site of a new bridge to Canada. Moroun owns other properties in the area, including sites across the river in Windsor and the derelict train station in Corktown.
