After the election, the Macomb County electorate got a lot of attention from the media, which saw it as being representative of a pervasive sentiment that swept the country. The majority in the county voted for Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, Democratic County Executive Mark Hackel addressed the presidential race during his State of the County speech at the Macomb Center for Performing Arts. Many Macomb voters chose Trump the person, not Trump the Republican, Jameson Cook of The Macomb Daily reports that he said.

“What have experienced here in Macomb County is residents vote for people more than they vote for parties,” Hackel said, according to the paper. “While some did vote for team R or team D, a larger number voted for person A or person B.”

Hillary Clinton got 176,317 votes in Macomb, compared to Trump's 224,665.

Straight-ticket voting in the county favored Clinton, according to Hackel.
