Jen Granholm wants a larger impact on national politics -- no surprise there -- and will have it as a prominent Democratic fund-raiser, Todd Spangler reports from Washington in the Free Press.
Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has been named co-chair of the largest liberal super PAC in the country, giving her what could be a prominent public role in the 2016 presidential race.
The political action committee is Priorities USA Action, which backs candidates with "a progressive vision that increases economic security and upward mobility for middle-class families." It raised $79 million and spent more than $75 million in the 2011-12-election cycle — more than any other super PAC supporting liberal candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Granholm, who turns 55 on Feb. 5, shares the leadership reins with Jim Messina, manager of President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
She and husband Dan Mulhern live in Northern California, where they each teach at the University of California-Berkeley, columnist Carol Cain writes separately in the Free Press.
Cain quotes the ex-governor (2003-11) as saying:
“I won’t run for office again, but I’ll certainly want to continue to help others, including Hillary Clinton if she chooses to run” for president.
