Marshall McGrew Jr. was shot four times, but he managed to call his mother as he lay dying on an abandoned lot in Detroit.

But, as Jim Kiertzner reports for WDIV-TV, McGrew was on the ground in uncut weeds at the corner.

"She couldn’t see him because the grass was too tall. She drove up and down the street and on the next block calling his name," McGrew's father, Marshall Sr., told WDIV.

Detroit police are working the case and one of the detectives is personal friends with the family.

But they have little to go on.

Witnesses say they saw two cars drive away after the shooting, but it was dark.

The only street light at that corner is out, like so many others in the city of Detroit.

McGrew's funeral is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home in Redford.
