Christine Beatty, Kwame Kilpatrick's former lover and ex-chief of staff, who was central to the sex-text scandal, is broke.

Robert Snell of the Detroit News reports that Beatty, 42,  filed for bankruptcy in Atlanta late last month and is wrestling with almost $400,000 in debt. She was working as a business consultant and is raising two daughters.

"She did not want to file bankruptcy," Beatty lawyer Jeffrey Morganroth told the News. "She was unfortunately left with no choice but to do so as a result of her financial difficulties, which have become more severe because of unsteady and declining income from her consulting engagements."

Snell reports that she appeared to be living a six-figure lifestyle, living in a $375,000 townhouse.

He writes:

According to the Oct. 26 bankruptcy filing, Beatty buckled under the weight of $60,000 in delinquent federal taxes, $220,000 in mortgage debt, consumer bills and $100,000 in restitution owed to Detroit from the 2008 text-message scandal.

The News reports that she can dump all the debt in court except the $100,000 in restitution she was saddled with after pleading guilty after lying under oath in the text messaging scandal. She has paid $15,000 of the restitution so far.

The News comes as the Kilpatrick sits on trial in federal court, facing a host of public corruption charges.
