Kwame Kilpatrick says he is a now Texan and no longer a Detroiter.

According to emails obtained by Robert Snell of the Detroit News, Kilpatrick has disavowed the city of his birth and the one that fueled his political rise and fall.

In the emails, he also discusses concerns about his safety in Detroit while standing trial on racketeering charges.

"I am a Texas resident…I have no intentions of ever residing here again," Kilpatrick wrote in a Sept. 13 email obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. "I'm often thought of as a Detroiter, but I am not. My life, family and residency is in Texas."

His future could be in a federal prison. Kilpatrick could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted of charges that include racketeering, extortion, bribery, mail and wire fraud and various tax crimes.
