Congressman Gary Peters

Congressman Gary Peters wants your vote . . . 19 months from now.

He'll announce his candidacy Wednesday to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, Shira Toeplitz reports for the Capitol Hill publication Roll Call. Peters gives "Democrats a top candidate to run for the open seat" in November 2014, she writes.

Peters will make the announcement in his hometown of Rochester Hills, a top Democratic aide confirmed. . . .

Democrats have the advantage to hold retiring Sen. Carl Levin’s seat. Peters is not expected to face a primary, and Republicans are still looking for a candidate.

Toeplitz quotes a Peters staff member, Haley Morris, as saying:

“Gary is grateful from all the encouragement he’s heard from folks around Michigan.”

The National Journal, anoher authoritative publication in Washington, D.C., also says Peters will decalre this week.

The Roll Call reporter notes that Debbie Dingell last week announced that she won't run to succeed Levin, 78. He came to the Senate in 1979.

Among Republicans, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and two congressmen -- Justin Amash and Mike Rogers -- are possible contenders.
