A Wayne County judge has ordered the sheriff's department to fix up the jail facilities and make them more livable, WXYZ reports.
Heather Catallo of WXYZ reports that Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenny, who is overseeing a consent decree to address issues of safety and staffing, says Sheriff Benny Napoleon has to make due with what he has and fix up the facilities. There are three county jails.
Catallo reports that there are hygiene issues including roaches and drain flies.
Catallo reports that Judge Kenny writes that it’s clear the Sheriff stopped performing basic maintenance inside the jails ever since the County launched the new jail construction project back in 2011. The new project was halted because it ran way over budget.
Kenny also noted that the deteriorating kitchen floor “cannot be properly cleaned or sanitized to prevent the infestation of insects and rodents," WXYZ reported.
“There is a problem with drain fly larvae and organic matter in the inmate showers, particularly when 20 inmates, some of whom have hygiene problems, all share a shower the size of a ‘phone booth," the judge wrote.
Napoleon says he needs more staff.
The judge has ordered him to move some deputies from places like the marine patrol to the jail, WXYZ reports.
