Jewell Jones, 21, who became the youngest elected Inkster City Council member last year, has reached another first: The youngest person to be elected state rep.
Jones, D-Dearborn Heights, beat his Republican opponent, Robert Pope on Nov. 8. with 65 percent of the vote, reports Stephanie Steinberg of The Detroit News.
The University of Michigan-Dearborn student, who is majoring in political science and business, tells the News he never wanted to be politician.
“I dreamed of being a spy,” he says, adding that he now loves the political life.
“There’s a lot of opportunity to do a lot of really great things, and you get to really dive into the community," he says.
Detroit City Councilman George Cushingberry Jr. was elected to the state House in November 1974 and was sworn in in January 1975, just before he turned 22 on Jan. 6. Jones will not turn 22 until April of next year, so by a mater of months, he will be the youngest to ever become a state representative.
Former Gov. John Engler was 22 in 1970 when he was elected to the state House.
