The local battle over petroleum coke -- an unsightly byproduct of the coal refinery process that can be sold for fuel -- isn't over.
Last year, after much citizen protest, and a battle between Detroit Bulk Storage and the city, the firm agreed to stop storing the product along the Detroit River near Fort Street.
But now the battle is shifting downriver to the River Rouge/Ecorse border, according to a report by Jim Lynch of the Detroit News.
The News reorts that Detroit Bulk Storage has a permit application before the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. If approved, it could store the material at its headquarters at 530 W. Great Lakes St. in River Rouge.
Last year, citizens had concerns about dust from the material blowing into neighborhoods and washing into the river, the News reported.
The DEQ has said testing of the material shows it poses no threat to human or animal health.
Of course, there are plenty skeptics of such findings.
The News reports that state officials will host a public information session March 5 in Wyandotte from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grand Harbor Banquet Hall, 1 St. John St.
