An auditor general’s report on the City of Detroit’s employee benefits has found significant likelihood of fraud in the administration of unemployment benefits, including what appears to be some active city workers in human resources creating fraudulent unemployment benefit claims for themselves.
Of 1,484 claims processed during the review period covered by the report, 13% or 192 were deemed to be “likely fraudulent” and another 36% or 536 were founded to be “highly questionable.”
An audit document delivered Thursday afternoon to Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr recommends that it be shared with Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy for possible criminal charges.
