Bankruptcy doesn't mean Detroit won't fill public safety vacancies -- some of them, at least.

The fire department begins accepting applications Aug. 19 for rookies who'll earn $29,352 a year or more. The salary can rise to $47,913 as experience is gained.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, plus passage of written and physical exams. Applicants with an Emergency Medical Technician license get preference.

A recruiting flyer is at the department's Facebook page. Fpor information,. call (313) 224-3725.

Applications can be submitted in three weeks at the city website's Human Resources section.

There are 90 openings, according to the administrator of an authoritative Detroit Firehouse page on Facebook. "The last hiring brought 10,000 applicants and more should be expected now," he posts.

Not all vacancies are being filled, according to that insider. "We have lost far more than 90 to retirement in the last few years," he notes on the social media page.
