A lesson on how costly a $500 bribe can be.
Ex- Pontiac Fire Chief Jeffrey Hawkins was led away Thursday in handcuffs after being sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court to six months in jail for taking a $500 bribe from an undercover FBI agent to ignore violations at a bar.
“The defendant betrayed the sacred trust of the people,” Oakland Circuit Judge Michael Warren said before reading the sentence, which also included four years’ probation, $1,000 in court costs and a $500 fine — the amount of the bribe that Hawkins accepted while being filmed by a camera hidden in a tissue box. The former fire chief received a credit against his jail time for one day served.
