Administrators reacting to parents who are anxious about non-resident in Grosse Pointe will impose a penalty tuition beginning this school.
The fines could amount to as much as $13,038 on scofflaw parents.
The Grosse Pointe Public School System's board of education approved the get-tough policy.
"The thinking is if people see a dollar amount there, people will think twice about trying to circumvent the residency requirements," Christian Fenton, deputy superintendent for business and operations, told the Detroit News.
The vote this week came about a month after a group calling itself "Residents for Residency" addressed the board with two petitions calling for stricter enrollment rules, amid concerns the district was too lax on enforcing residency rules.
