For decades now, Detroit has had a dearth of super markets and department stores.
So it's welcome news that Meijer, the Grand Rapids supermarket chain, plans to open a second superstore in the city.
Frank Witsil of the Detroit Free Press writes that Meijer plans to mobilize its construction team within the next few weeks to the new site at Grand River and and McNichols. The store is expected to open next year.
The Meijer at Eight Mile and Woodward Avenue opened last year to a great deal of excitement.
“I think it’s a beautiful thing,” Reggie Davis, a district deputy manager of Detroit’s Department of Neighborhoods who lives near the intersection, told the Freep.
The Freep reports that Davis said the community members met with the Meijer executives and "they asked us what we'd like to have from them." -- A.L.
