Alluding to you-know-what fresh twist in Detroit's mayoral race, the Free Press editorial board says "the city’s Aug. 6 primary is more than a cynical charade" as it endorses Mike Duggan for the top office.
The editorial doesn't mention his leading rival, Benny Napoleon, who's almost universally expected to qualify for November's showdown between the two two vote-getters.
At the link below, the paper also endorses nine City Council contenders "we believe are best suited for this unprecedented moment in Detroit’s history." Along with Duggan, the four-paragraph editorial says, "they share a clear-eyed understanding of Detroit’s predicament, and a fierce determination to make certain residents’ interests come first in the bankruptcy ordeal to come.
A day earlier, The Detroit News also suggested write-in votes for Duggan in the primary to assure "a vigorous mayoral campaign" this fall.
