Matt Helms reports in the Free Press that consultants to Detroit recommend that the City Council become part-time and take significant cuts to its staffing.

The report, which will be presented to the city-state financialadvisory board this afternoon, recommends reducing the council and its salaries to part time. Council members make generally between $73,000 and $77,000 a year.

The report also recommends reducing support staff for council members down to one each.

The report notes that the council has 48 staff members, or four to eight employees for each council member. Altogether, 78 people work for the council or divisions that report directly to it.
