As had been expected, Detroit City Councilman George Cushingberry will have his law license suspended for 45 days to resolve a grievance brought by a former client.

Detroit News: [Cushingberry attorney] Todd Russell Perkins said the State Attorney Discipline Board issued the order Monday imposing the suspension for Cushingberry beginning Feb. 18.

Perkins said the deal was reached without a formal hearing. The former client claimed he compensated Cushingberry for services, but the 61-year-old city council president pro tem didn’t fully deliver. Cushingberry pleaded no contest to the professional misconduct claims. To be reinstated, he must also pay $500 in restitution to the ex-client and attend a professional workshop, according to the order signed Monday.

Cushingberry made news earlier this month after he was pulled over and Detroit police found liquor and marijuana paraphernalia in the councilman's car. He was let go without a citation.

It was also revealed that Cushingberry filed for bankruptcy in 2005, owing debts of more than $530,000.
