Give the Detroit Symphony Orchestra a pat on the back!

For the first time since 2007 the organization has a balanced budget.

Raising $18.9 million in donations, the symphony doubled what it collected it 2011 with a record number of donors.

Plus, the DSO's revenue numbers were up nearly across the board, including in total attendance, single ticket sales and subscription ticket sales.

The shortfall for fiscal 2010... was $9 million. In 2009, the deficit was $6.5 million.

Despite seeming like it might "splinter and fly apart" a few years ago, the orchestra has made big strides in recent years, playing at Carnegie Hall for the first time in 17 years and hosted a wildly successful Beethoven festival, according to the Detroit News.

The DSO has been broadening its reach across metro Detroit, selling out special shows in Detroit suburbs and hosting streaming performances online.
