It only took more than a decade for the city to nearly complete what was supposed to be a significantly shorter federal oversight process, but the Detroit Police Department says it is ready to put on its big-boy pants and govern itself. Attorneys filed a motion Monday asking a federal court to suspend the Department of Justice's cop shop oversight

Detroit Free Press: The motion comes after Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. issued an order Thursday calling for the federal monitor to increase the frequency of his visits to Detroit because the city is non-compliant with 12% of the requirements in the use of force consent judgment.

The city is in full compliance with the consent judgment dealing with conditions of compliance and is compliant with 93% of the requirements in the consent judgments overall, the order said.

The federal intervention intended to help the city comply with civil rights rules was expected to end after just five years, but face numerous problems including Sheryl Robinson Wood, the monitor overseeing the process, sleeping with then-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
