Detroit City Council member Kwame Kenyatta, who had announced that he won't run for re-election, now says he may not finish out his term, which runs through 2013.

WWJ's VIckie Thomas reports Kenyatta has some undisclosed ailment that is not life-threatening.

WWJ reports on its website:

There’s been speculation that the recent absence of one Detroit City Council member is due to his frustration over the city’s emergency manager situation. But, WWJ’s City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas says that’s not why he’s been AWOL.

Kwame Kenyatta has been on a medical leave for about two months, and he tells Thomas he’s not sure if he’ll be returning to the council table to finish out his term.

“Anything that takes you out for a length of time, somewhat, medication can be a problem, but I’m hoping that it’s not serious and long-term, so I’m seeking second opinions and that kind of thing … I’m in the process of doing that now,” Kenyatta said. “Without getting too detailed about it, but let me just say, nothing life-threatening.”

Thomas also reports that Kenyatta has a book coming out June 8 and plans to move out of state.
