A West Michigan school superintendent feels "the prudent thing to do is reroute the bus" when students come to a band competition in downtown Detroit this weekend.

With a manhunt underway for whoever has fired at 24 vehicles on or near I-96 since Oct. 16, buses carrying Grandville students from Kent County will be among those taking a detour, Tony Briscoe reports in The Detroit News:

Superintendent Ron said his school district and others will err on the side of caution as they have decided not take the usual I-96 route to the Michigan Competing Band Association state finals Saturday at Ford Field.

"Our normal route would take us through that corridor, which has been a hot spot," Caniff said. "Giving it some thought, the prudent thing to do is reroute the bus."

"When we're responsible for students, it takes it to another level," Caniff said. "Literally and figuratively, we'll take the extra mile."

One person has been injured by the phantom shooter, who has struck in Oakland, Livingston, Ingham and Shiawassee counties. Three vehicles hit were on I-96, State Police say, while others were nearby.

A $102,000 reward has helped generate more than 2,000 tips to a task force made up of federal, state and local police agencies, The News reports.
