New City Council President Saunteel Jenkins has ordered Detroit's Auditor General to review city accounts previously controlled by former Council President Charles Pugh. Jenkins isn't accusing Pugh of wrongdoing, but now she's at the helm, she wants to know the ins and outs of three accounts worth more than $2 million.
Detroit Free Press: In addition to requesting the audit of Pugh’s office, Jenkins also asked the city’s inspector general to investigate claims of missing equipment from the council’s media services division. Jenkins did not provide details of the missing equipment or its value.
Jenkins said Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr does not have to approve her inquiries because they were issued in the form of memorandums rather than contracts or resolutions on which the council must vote.
Although he no longer gets paid and is stripped of the council presidency, Pugh technically remains a member of City Council. He has been missing for about a month since he requested (and was denied) medical leave for an unspecified issue and was accused on an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old high school student he was mentoring.
