In his spare time, Steve McClain of Southgate patrols the streets, making sure people in cars are wearing their seat belts. He has mounted three high-definition cameras on his vehicle to catch drivers in flagrante delicto.
Quirky, yes, but sort of public spirited.
But this self-proclaimed seat-belt cop ran into trouble recently when he noticed a real cop, from the Detroit Police Department, driving through Southgate in a patrol car, sans seat belt.
A video made by McClain and shown on Fox 2 shows McClain being public spirited:
"Pull over!" "Pull over!" "Where's your damn seatbelt?" he asks.
The cop didn't stop.
But now McClain is looking for a lawyer to help him with a reckless driving ticket. It came in the mail.
Ron Savage did the report for Channel 2.
