Canada’s Automotive Capital is thinking about changes to its downtown that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago — closing downtown Windsor streets and turning them into pedestrian-friendly public spaces, the Windsor Star reports.

“Absolutely, I think the time has come,” Mayor Eddie Francis told reporters Monday night following an ideas-filled strategic planning session of city council. He said foot traffic, rather than vehicle traffic, would represent “a more creative use of the public space” in the downtown.

With their current political terms half-way through, councilors pledged to push through an ambitious agenda over the next two years focused on making the downtown cleaner, foot-friendlier and geared more to families, as well as on creating better pedestrian connections between the developed core and the parkland waterfront.
