Some bright signs on the Woodward Avenue light rail front.
The Detroit Free Press reports that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood plans a visit Monday to the Motor City to discuss the proposed 3.3 mile system.
The paper reported that the plan could get a jump start if LaHood announces money for the rail system.
The meeting is set for Mayor Dave Bing, Gov. Rick Snyder and some key investors including Rip Rapson, head of the Kresge Foundation, Roger Penske and Quicken Loans' Dan Gilbert. The Kresge Foundation has pledged $35 million toward the M1 Rail project.
"I assume that wouldn't be happening if LaHood is coming to give us bad news," Rapson said of the meeting.
The mayor's office is expressing cautious optimism.
Private sector investors include Penske Corp., Quicken Loans, the Ilitch family and Peter Karmanos' Compuware.
