Bobby Ferguson would have to stamp a lot of license plates during his 21-year prison sentence to earn the $6.2 million restitution a federal judge says he owes Detroit .
Fortunately, the government can seize any hidden assets and there should be plenty of those considering the number of undeserved contracts Ferguson picked up during Kwame Kilpatrick's tenure as mayor.
Detroit Free Press: Ferguson, who is serving a 21-year prison sentence for helping Kilpatrick run a public corruption scheme, was hit with a higher restitution tab than Kilpatrick because, the government argued, he was the driver of the scheme and the one who made most of the money. Ferguson got $127 million in city contracts while Kilpatrick was mayor. Prosecutors said at least $73 million of that work was obtained illegally.
Kilpatrick, who got a cut of Ferguson’s illegal gains and received a 28-year prison sentence, was ordered to pay $4.6 million in restitution to the city of his Detroit for his crimes.
Kilpatrick and Ferguson were convicted in March on numerous federal charges including racketeering, extortion, and bribery.
