Stop hiding, a new Vote Detroit group urges young residents.

The message is aimed at residents ducking higher auto insurance rates by claiming a suburban address and not registering to vote in Detroit, Nancy Nall Derringer explains at Bridge magazine.

Speak speaks with co-founder Allison Kriger, 27, a downtown defense lawyer who's a lifelong Detroiter.

"It's shortsighted to say you don't vote because of insurance," she said. "When people say they want to be a part of Detroit resurgence, you have to be a part of the process.  . . .

"We have to start being a city that shapes our services instead of acquiescing."

The group's other founder is Ellen Schneider, who's a young downtown bankruptcy attorney and fellow Wayne State Laws School graduate.

Under the motto "Be Here, Be Heard," their website has voter registration information and an interactive map of Detroit's seven new council districts.

This year will be the first in almost a century in which council members will be elected from districts, rather than entirely at-large. Which is why the Vote Detroit campaign is so important now, Kriger said.
