Democrat U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, who was expected to beat Republican opponent Terri Lynn Land, did just that.

WDIV reports that Peters beat Land on Tuesday for the U.S. Senate seat that was held  by Carl Levin.

WDIV reports that Peters had been leading in polls by a substantial margin. As of 10 p.m., Peters lead Land by a margin of 52-44 percent.

It prevented Republicans from capturing a Senate seat in Michigan for the first time in two decades.

Plenty of supporters packed a ballroom at the MGM Casino to celebrate the victory.

The crowd chanted "Gary Gary."

He talked about working on raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, strengthening laws to guarantee equal pay for women and protecting the Affordable Care Act.

"No matter who you are and where you lived, you should have access to affordable, quality health care," Peters said.
